Week 13
Disciple Leadership
"No one has learned the meaning of living until he has surrendered his ego to the service of his fellow man. Service to others is akin to duty, the fulfillment of which brings true joy." - President Thomas S. Monson
How do we serve others best? Is it by listening to someone who is hurting? Is it by donating money or time to food shelters? Is it by being engaged in our family and invested in our relationships? Is community involvement the key? Visiting senior homes? Running businesses with fair wages and benefits? Caring for the environment? Investing in socially responsible businesses? Participating in microfinancing small business loans in developing companies? For me the answer to all the questions is YES. We have a responsibility to one another. We have a responsibility to help each other where and when we can. We are supposed to help each other in this life and if we are in a position to be giving, then we give. Jeffrey R Holland gave a great talk called, Are We Not All Beggars. He said that we are "to do what we can for those in need."
Jesus Christ was an example of social innovation. He helped where He could, how He could. Sometimes that meant feeding thousands with what He had. Other times in meant listening to a woman at a well. He taught in stories that people could apply to themselves. This story is a great example of how an ordinary person saw a need and helped how he could. Jesus told us to be like He is and He lived a life caring for others.
My goal is to help others throughout my life. When there are problems, I want to be able to be part of developing solutions and facilitating change. I want to listen to understand and then work to create and implement solutions. I want to be engaged in the change and involved in the process of making the world better for people who struggle. Since Jesus Christ is who I want to be more like, this goal brings me closer to that goal.
